Opportunities for community violence reduction in Africa

Throughout October Robert Muggah continued his review of peace support operations in Africa. He visited the Democratic Republic of Congo – particularly Goma, Beni and Bunia – to review disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) as well as community violence reduction (CVR) projects. This follows on from his visits to Central African Republic (CAR) and Mali. Robert is preparing a new module for CVR to add to the United Nations Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS). According to Robert, “the IDDRS are intended to be used by all UN missions to help plan, implement, finance and monitor CVR around the world. At a time where the UN is facing a major financial crunch, it will need to much more with less.”
