Complex challenges
demand coordinated action

In the face of  increasingly interconnected global crises whose impacts transcend borders, multilateralism is essential. This is true for responses to climate change, biodiversity loss, and organized environmental crime, all of which threaten human existence. For these responses to be effective, they must be built through collective effort.

The Igarapé Institute works to build bridges between the local and the global, connecting Brazil with multilateral efforts, especially in security, nature, and climate. Our goal is to increase impact, strengthen connections between different processes, from the G20 and BRICS to the Summit of the Future, and make global governance institutions, particularly the United Nations, more inclusive, transparent, effective, and accountable.

Our lines of work

Internationalizing the debate and action to tackle environmental crime

We work to make sure environmental crime is included in the global climate agenda and to strengthen regional cooperation through the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).

Reforming global governance

We work to make multilateralism more inclusive and effective through reforms to the UN and International Financial Institutions, and by connecting global UN processes with those of the BRICS and G20.
