Global Futures Bulletin: The Amazon Climate Bomb
Rampant deforestation and degradation are pushing the Amazon Basin to a dangerous tipping point that could jeopardize its vast carbon capture and water production potential, with serious consequences for South America and beyond.
The second Global Futures Bulletin – The Amazon Climate Bomb – highlights the threats facing the Basin and possible global, national and regional solutions. The publication notes that there are essentially two ways to defuse the Amazon climate bomb. The first involves preventing and reversing global warming, a central priority of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. The second requires ending deforestation, for which more limited global commitments exist and leadership is uncertain.
