Addressing climate change is a matter of survival

The climate crisis is more than just an environmental issue: it directly impacts people’s lives, community stability, and the security of entire societies. Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, droughts, and floods increase vulnerabilities, deplete resources, and worsen inequalities, demonstrating that without climate balance, people’s lives are at risk.

The Igarapé Institute works to address climate risks in an integrated way, creating synergies between climate and nature agendas and linking public policy, science, emerging technologies, and governance. We operate across different levels, from local to global, to enhance community resilience, support the fulfillment of climate commitments, and enable strategic, evidence-based solutions.

Our main lines of work

Promoting synergies between climate and nature
We advocate for integrating nature, including forests, into the international climate agenda, fostering alignment between the three Rio Conventions on climate change, biodiversity, and desertification.
Finance, adaptation, and climate resilience
We assist in developing financial resources and tools that support a green and just transition, and we work with communities and governments to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen capacity to respond to extreme weatherevents.
Strengthening climate governance and policy
We contribute to institutional innovation (for example, by proposing a UN Climate and Nature Council) and to the formulation and implementation of national and regional policies, multisectoral cooperation, and the integration of different strategic agendas.
