Brazil takes steps to protect privacy

The European data privacy law – GDPR – came into effect last May and is causing ripples around the world. Brazil may also see a new personal data protection bill pass the national senate. The Igarapé Institute and its partners have actively supported the new legislation which promises the establishment of a data protection institutions, including signing a manifesto pushing for its approval.
In order to shine a light on the importance of personal data protection, Igarapé Institute launched a new series on its YouTube and Facebook channels entitled “Digital security and data protection: What does it have to do with you?” Igarapé also issued a statement urging the national authorities to ensure Brazil’s new data protection entity is independent, as originally recommended in the bill.
