Global Task Force - Instituto Igarapé

The Igarapé Institute and New America are convening a group of 15 technologists, researchers, and practitioners to develop recommendations guiding the design and deployment of predictive algorithms.

Predictive tools are revolutionizing security and development around the world. On the one hand, they are generating efficiencies and economies of scale. On the other hand, these technologies have a dark side.

To help ensure predictive technologies promote human rights and sustainable and equitable development, the Igarapé Institute and New America created the Global Task Force on Predictive Analytics for Security and Development. The task force comprises some of the world’s leading thinkers, practitioners, and advocates. They come from five continents and represent a diversity of backgrounds and identities, including technologists, lawyers, journalists, activists, academics, entrepreneurs, and a Nobel laureate.

The task force will meet several times throughout 2023 to prepare recommendations primarily targeting developing world governments, companies, and nonprofits. It will issue several briefs throughout the year and a public report at the beginning of 2024.

This report offers recommendations to ensure more accountable, transparent and ethical AI in Global South contexts.

This publication presents principles and practical recommendations for the ethical and inclusive design and use of predictive analytics for security and development, with a focus on lower and middle-income countries.
