Recognized for its international presence, Instituto Igarapé advances global agendas at the UN’s Summit of the Future and New York Climate Week

With active participation in high-level discussions, Igarapé leads agendas on global governance, digital space, development financing, climate and nature, connecting the discussions in New York to upcoming global milestones, such as the G20 and COP30.

Starting this week, New York City will host high-level discussions on global governance and challenges related to climate change. Among the key highlights are the Action Days (September 20-21), a series of events bringing together leading governmental, civil society, and private sector actors at the United Nations (UN) headquarters, to debate critical global issues. These discussions set the stage for the Summit of the Future (September 22-23), convened by the UN Secretary-General to rethink and reform global governance structures to better address current and future challenges, gathering over 120 heads of state and government. All of this takes place during New York Climate Week (officially September 22-29), one of the largest annual events on the subject worldwide, where business, government, and civil society leaders unite to drive climate action.

In efforts to strengthen global cooperation and multilateralism in key processes for the formulation of Our Common Agenda by the High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism — which now culminates in the Summit of the Future — Igarapé Institute is the only Brazilian civil society organization to collaborate directly with the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General (since 2020) and will be actively engaged in discussions in New York, hosting three of its own events and participating as a speaker in at least six others.

“Our intensive agenda in New York aims not only to share knowledge and experiences but also to help shape international policies and practices around public goods, particularly climate and global sustainability,” says Ilona Szabó, co-founder and president of Igarapé Institute, and only Latin American member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board (HLAB) on Effective Multilateralism.

In addition to co-organizing the event “Advancing Global Governance Reform: Harnessing Synergies from the Summit of the Future and the G20 for a Resilient Future,” which is part of the official Action Days agenda for the Summit of the Future and will feature Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, Brazil’s G20 sherpa, Instituto Igarapé will also participate in and organize discussions on strengthening multilateralism and global governance reform; climate governance and financing for nature and climate; and digital space regulation.

“We have consistently worked alongside the UN, the G20, and multilateral development banks to promote global governance reforms and establish strategic connections that address the global challenges we face. The actions we take now — through the G20, the Summit of the Future and beyond — will set the course for a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient world”, says Giovanna Kuele, manager of Igarapé’s international cooperation program. “Additionally, we are advocating for enhanced global governance to ensure the safe and ethical development of Artificial Intelligence. In this regard, we call on UN Member States, tech companies, and civil society groups to close the governance gap between the Global North and South, addressing issues of infrastructure, investment, human capital, and regulatory capacity related to AI,” adds Dr. Robert Muggah, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Igarapé.

Since its foundation 13 years ago, Igarapé Institute has worked globally in the fields of international cooperation and security. To address the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of global challenges, Igarapé has been expanding its mandate and mission to develop research, solutions and partnerships that influence public and corporate policies and practices. The aim is to overcome challenges in areas such as international peace and security, climate governance and digital risks. “The global challenges are many, which is why we strive to serve as a channel that facilitates the integration of different agendas, acting as a bridge for dialogue between decision-makers, civil society and the private sector, connecting the global, regional and local spheres,” concludes Ilona.
