Check out events, launches, and partnerships during the COP30

The Igarapé Institute returns from Belém after a strategic participation at COP30, contributing to the global climate agenda across three key themes: financing for nature, tackling environmental crimes, and new designs for effective international cooperation. The beginning of COP was marked by the inclusion of environmental crime for the first time in the COP30 Action Agenda, also highlighted in the Leaders’ Summit. This milestone reinforces the need to connect climate, territorial governance and development, security, and ecosystem protection — a discussion that Igarapé has been bringing to global forums.

During the Conference, the Institute officially launched, at an event in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Green Bridge Facility (GBF), an impact initiative dedicated to supporting responsible investments and enterprises committed to sustainable development in the Amazon. Also in partnership with institutions such as IBAMA, MMA, the Federal Police, Itamaraty, and INPE, it presented the “Plan to Accelerate Solutions: Combating Environmental Crime to Achieve Zero Deforestation,” an action agenda initiative to guide governments and multilateral actors toward a roadmap for zero deforestation. Igarapé will coordinate this plan, through a global coalition in partnership with the Amazonian Alliance for Reducing the Impacts of Gold Mining in Colombia (AARIMO) and The Royal Foundation.

The program also included a series of publication launches, debates, discussion circles, and panels with renowned scientists and environmentalists such as Carlos Nobre, Johan Rockström, and former Minister of the Environment Izabella Teixeira; as well as political leaders such as Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, former President of Costa Rica, and UK Minister Mary Creagh. The Institute also participated in the delivery of a letter from scientists to Brazilian and international authorities, such as Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Minister of the Environment Marina Silva, and COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago, advocating for a clear roadmap to eliminate deforestation and promote the fair and gradual transition away from fossil fuels.
