Human Development Report 2023/24

The United Nations Development Programme’s 2023/24 Human Development Report, “Overcoming the Impasse: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World,” highlights the challenges posed by intensifying inequalities and global political polarization, emphasizing the importance of addressing these problems urgently and assertively. The document, prepared by the Advisory Board, of which Ilona Szabó is a member, emphasizes the shift in how countries depend on one another and suggests a future direction in which cooperation and multilateralism will be even more important for dealing with these issues and seizing the opportunities arising from this interdependence.

Why do the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement still seem so distant? Why has it been difficult to achieve peace in many places? And why are we lagging behind in digital governance while artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing? These are some of the points raised by the report, challenging us to rethink strategies and find ways to move forward without resorting to violence or isolationism. We need to work together to find solutions and create a just future for all people.
