Security

If one person is not safe, no one is

Keeping people safe has always been a core mission for the Igarapé Institute, which has established itself as a leading voice in public security. Over time, and facing increasingly complex and interconnected challenges, the Institute began to view security through a broader lens.

Today, we focus on “systemic risks”: crises that do not play out in isolation but overlap and amplify one another, such as climate change, the rise of organized crime, geopolitical conflicts, and environmental degradation. These issues are closely linked and demand joint, coordinated responses capable of protecting both people and planet.

Our lines of work

Tackling organized crime

We work to enhance the capacity of governments, the private sector, and civil society to disrupt criminal networks and their finances, and to coordinate the global response.

Peace and security

We support multilateral and national institutions in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and strengthening resilient institutions.

AI security and ethics

We promote the safe and responsible development of artificial intelligence in partnership with public, private, and nonprofit actors throughout the Global South.

Our track record in security

For almost two decades, our team has researched, tested, and evaluated innovative approaches to crime prevention, violence reduction, stronger justice systems justice, and improved security policies.

We believe that security — both real and perceived — is a core pillar of a just and democratic society that must always be grounded in human rights, transparency, and good governance.

Throughout this work, Igarapé has established itself as a global leader in public and international security, contributing to progress on issues such as:

  Gun control and drug policy

  Responsible policing and security technology

  Combating illegal financial flows

Penal and institutional reform of the criminal justice system

  Conflict prevention and territorial stabilization

  Peace operations and peacebuilding
