New publication underscores the need to integrate climate, biodiversity, and land use into the international agenda

Report highlights progress and gaps at COP30 in advancing Climate–Nature synergies and outlines pathways for implementation

The Igarapé Institute has released Climate–Nature Synergies at COP30 and Beyond, a comprehensive analysis of COP30 outcomes in Belém and their implications for integrating climate, biodiversity, and land governance within the framework of the Rio Conventions.

The study examines how climate–nature synergies were addressed across the conference’s four pillars (Leaders’ Summit, negotiations, Action Agenda, and mobilization), identifying political, procedural, and financial progress, as well as the persistent gaps between ambition and implementation.

Key issues analyzed include:

  • A more consistent integration of the links between climate, forests, and ecosystems in COP30 decisions and initiatives.
  • The establishment of a formal entry point for addressing synergies within the Climate COP process.
  • The launch and consolidation of financial instruments and coalitions focused on forest protection, the bioeconomy, and combating environmental crime.
  • Strengthening the debate on institutional coherence among the COP, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The report emphasizes that while COP30 expanded political space for climate–nature integration, significant challenges remain in translating this momentum into durable governance mechanisms and coordinated implementation.

Looking ahead to the 2026 conference cycle, when all three Rio Conventions will hold their COPs, the publication offers recommendations and practical pathways to consolidate a more coherent, results-oriented agenda, particularly in forest regions that are critical to global climate stability.
