KYT-e Platform Analyzes Territorial Opportunities and Risks and Supports Green Business

The goal of KYT-e, a public and open-access platform available online, is to support sustainable businesses that generate positive impact and help curb illicit economies.

Green enterprises, responsible investors, and public authorities now have a tool that helps projects and impact-driven businesses navigate the main challenges of the territories in which they operate.

KYT-e (Know Your Territory) is an open platform that maps risks and opportunities across territories based on six dimensions relevant to the viability of green businesses: security, institutional presence, economic context, social fabric, land-use management, and climate and nature.

The platform helps identify promising territories for Nature-Based Solutions, guide sustainable investments, plan the expansion of existing businesses, and monitor project performance over time. It also supports public authorities with data to reduce risks and plan sustainable development policies at the local level.

Created by the Green Bridge Facility (GBF), an impact initiative of the Igarapé Institute, the method aims to reduce barriers, guide investments, and strengthen economies compatible with standing forests, countering the rise of environmental crime.

“Confronting environmental crime is essential for Brazil to achieve its zero-deforestation goals. We must transform an ecosystem dominated by crime into one of sustainable businesses that generate positive impacts for people and nature. KYT-e is a method designed to guide this transition and strengthen forest-compatible economies,” says Ilona Szabó, founder of GBF and president of the Igarapé Institute.

By recognizing the vulnerabilities of each territory, the platform helps guide more robust business plans, creating conditions for green capital to reach responsible enterprises that protect territories and generate shared value.

“Often, issues such as land tenure insecurity, regulatory gaps, and institutional fragility discourage responsible businesses. Our goal is to provide data and knowledge that allow investors and entrepreneurs to anticipate and overcome these challenges,” adds Szabó.

How the platform was created

The platform’s methodology was developed from an extensive database and a statistical technique that enables integrated analysis of indicators. Its design was driven by a specific question: How can Nature-Based Solution businesses operate in territories with high potential but also significant risks?

The answer emerged through the concept of “Know Your Territory”, which brings together territorial intelligence and data science to guide investment decisions, particularly in forest restoration projects and public policy planning.
